2014 OUA Badminton Championship Results

It was a tough weekend filled with nail-biters and upsets, this year’s OUA Badminton Championships promised and it delivered. Held this year at the University of Waterloo, this tournament was the first year to feature international badminton court mats for tournament play. The presentation was amazing and it really increased the profile of badminton in Ontario.

Your York University Lions High performance Badminton team sent out a the maximum number of allowed participants again this year to fight for the Provincial crown. It was a great weekend as the team had 6 teams that qualified to move on into the main round from pool play. This was a 1st for this team in its 3rd year without Varsity status and this progress should open the eyes of many!

Among the main round qualifiers were York’s top male shuttlers, Nathan Cheng and Matthew Lai. As mentioned in the previous post, Nathan is a favourite for the Rookie of the Year award. As expected, he put on a show and moved on in Men’s Singles and in Men’s Doubles with Matthew Lai, a 4th year player in his graduating year. The performances these 2 gentlemen put on last weekend was extremely impressive. They played with heart, determination and a never-quit attitude, fully embodying the qualities of a York Lion.

Billy Ho showing that York Lion grit and spirit!

Among the other players to make it out of their pools were Billy Ho and Ivy Phung (Mixed Doubles), Andrew Quach and Andrea Chin (Mixed Doubles) and Derek Hui and Billy Ho (Men’s Doubles).

York University was represented by:

Men’s Singles: Nathan Cheng, Matthew Lai, Derek Hui and Marco Tieu.
Women’s Singles: Annie Luong, Yuqi WangChhiv Jing Yang and Julia You
Men’s Doubles: Nathan Cheng/Matthew Lai, Billy Ho/Derek Hui, Ho Ming Li/Shi Han and Andrew Quach/Luan Nguyen.
Women’s Doubles: Ivy Phung/Annie Luong, Andrea Chin/Yuqi Wang, Julia You/Chhiv Jing Yang and Peggy Fan/Michelle Ko.
Mixed Doubles: Billy Ho/Ivy Phung, Shi Han/Peggy Fan, Andrew Quach/Andrea Chin and Ho Ming Li/Michelle Ko.

Unfortunately, the injury bug did hit York’s Julia You during her Women’s Singles matches but she continued on and showed a lot of fight to finish her match. She did, however, have to withdraw from Women’s Doubles because of the injury and we wish her a fast recovery.

Even though York finished with less points from last year, this year was the first time we had 6 teams make it out of pool play displaying the huge improvement in the players skill levels compared to the rest of the OUA and the depth of talent on this team. Great job everyone on their accomplishments this past weekend and the coaching staff is extremely proud of everyone on the team. This team truly displayed what it meant to be a York Lion and left nothing in the tank. Keep up the great work!

Stay tuned for this summer’s tournament news where the High Performance Badminton team will travel to other cities to compete and continue their quest in the badminton circuits! Pictures for the championships will be up on Flickr soon as well.

The 2014 OUA Badminton Championships are this weekend!

Hi badminton fans!

Your High Performance Badminton team from York University is set to participate in this year’s OUA Championships held at the University of Waterloo on March 7-9, 2014. This year welcomes 2 new universities to the mix, Carlton University and the University of Ottawa.

This year promises to be an exciting competition with past OUA medalists and OUA All Stars returning to compete for the university provincial crown.

York University is bringing their new recruit, Nathan Cheng, a participant in this season’s World Junior Badminton Championships. His trophy case consists of a couple Junior Provincial and Junior National titles. The coaching staff is extreamly excited to see how the rookie will stack up against this year’s OUA competition. We think he’ll do great and Nathan is definitely one of the favorites to win this year’s Rookie of the Year award.

Come out to support if you can and feel free to leave messages for our athletes in this post’s comment section.
