The High Performance Badminton Team at York University would like to invite it’s supporters out for a weekend of hard fought badminton competition. Seven (7) universities will be represented at this event including York University. The team has been training extremely hard this year and get to leave it all on the court this weekend at Ryerson University. In fact  some of the players that were part of the Development Team made the final rosters. This goes to show the heart and passion these Student-Athletes have for badminton and the support the York Badminton community has for the Sport.

Please come out an support as The Team will be out in full force to try and take home some hardware!

2012-13 Season Update

And we’re back again for the 2012-2013 season.

With the sad news of many veteran graduating from last year, the High Performance Unit has booted up the 2012-2013 season with an amazing tryouts of over 75 players. A fierce competition was taken place to fight a spot to be part of the team to compete in the OUA Championship. After an intense month-long selection, the final 25 and the first-ever D-team were selected. With so many rookies showing flashes of brilliance, coach Anthony Chow decided to initiate a “Development Unit” labelled as the D-team. In hopes to developing players for future seasons, many players with great potentials were recruited to be part of the new sub-team. Since the tryouts, the High Performance team has starter their intense and vigorous trainings in preparation for the OUA Championship at the end of the season…

And we’re back again for the 2012-13 Season!!

It’s been a while since our last post but to bring everyone up to speed, we’re just going to list the Events to shorten the post.

- High Performance Badminton at York University is a Proud member of Team Victor!!!

To our delight, Victor Canada has generously sponsored our team and our efforts to climb back into badminton prominence. We are very happy to have the support of a badminton powerhouse and many of the players couldn’t be happier! I know there’s a couple of players that are still over excited about this. One of those reasons is being sponsored by the same company as their favourite player, Lee Yong Dae. Thank you for your support! GO TEAM VICTOR!!!

- Jason Mak is an OUA All-Star finishes 4th in Men’s Doubles with partner Erik Chong at 2012 OUA Badminton Championships

Jason Mak of York University was on a tear at the start of the tournament. He went 2-1 in his Singles pool and was set up for an exciting 1st round match against Mat Marr of the University of Waterloo. After losing the 1st set 18-21, Mak turned up the intensity and captured the second set by a score of 22-20. In the 3rd set, Jason used quick smashes and deceptive drops to dispose of his opponent in the final set by a score of 21-12. In the Quarter-finals of Men’s Singles, Jason Mak put on a thrilling show against the #1 Seed, Martin Giuffre of the University of Western Ontario. Showing great resilience, Jason captured the 2nd set 21-19 after losing the 1st set 15-21. The 3rd set came down to a battle of endurance, wits and experience as each rally was a grind-it-out battle. In the end, the #1 seed from Western came out on top taking the final set 21-8. Jason Mak was a consensus wild card in this tournament. Each of his matches against the seeded players could have been a possible upset that would’ve changed the landscape of the Championship Team Rankings.

Jason paired up with Erik Chong to reach the Semi-final where they went up against another #1 Seed, Nathan Lee and Andrew Tai Pow of the University of Waterloo. After a nail-biting 1st set that could have gone either way, Lee and Tai Pow pulled ahead after the break in the second set and the match ended in a 21-16 21-15 win for Waterloo. Unwavered by this loss, Mak and Chong played a convincing 2 setter that afternoon against another University of Waterloo pair, Danusha Ambagahwita and Wes Marr for the Bronze medal. Unfortunately the pair from York were unable to continue their success on the court as they fell 11-21 17-21 to conceded the Bronze Medal.

This was Jason Mak’s 1st OUA Championships and was a finalist in the Rookie of the Year voting. Erik Chong had his best run of his University Badminton Career in his possible final year with the Team. Congratulations to both and the High Performance Badminton Team at York University and its coaches are very proud of both players and the success of the Team in its 1st year without Varsity status and funding. Keep up the good work!!

And we’re back!

Hello all!

For all who haven’t been informed, as of June 21st, 2011, Sport York of York University has decided to remove badminton as a varsity sport (http://www.yorkulions.ca/featured/2011-12/NSM).  It is a sad event for all of us who feel so passionate about a very much under-rated and misunderstood sport within the Sport York community.

Badminton is a highly competitive sport and is recognized worldwide as an official sport within the Summer Olympics. In Canada, badminton is a growing sport, more specifically in Toronto, Michelle Li of University of Toronto is currently ranked second in Canada and 46th in the world. Number of other nationally and internationally ranked badminton players including Surabi Kadam, Martin Guiffre and Charles Pyne have all represented their respective university within the Ontario University Association. It is truly unfortunate to see York University no longer supporting a team.

Since June, we have then worked with the York University Badminton Club (http://www.yorku.ca/yubc/), with advice from various university coaches, in hopes to sustain a team to represent York University at the OUA championships in March. We are currently running as the “High Performance Unit” under YUBC. It is currently led by a group of former varsity players, some of which are also certified coaches.

Although we do not represent York under a varsity status, we are dedicated to train and operate very much similar to the former York Badminton Varsity team. This includes, but not limited to, 2 week try-outs period, 4-day practice weeks, fitness and technical training as well as team bonding activities.

We have a large database of dedicated veteran players who are working together to support the new badminton team of 2011. We hope to have your continued support as well.
Feel free to email us with suggestions or any questions you may have.
